#InstaKC Captures: National Barbecue Month

May 15, 2017

#InstaKC Captures is a blog series that highlights some of the most photogenic sights in Kansas City. From iconic monuments to lesser known gems, we tour the city in search of some of the best places to take a snapshot.

With more than 100 restaurants smoking everything from ribs and burnt ends to pulled pork and even fish, there's no place more fitting to celebrate National Barbecue Month than KC, home of the world's best barbecue. May's installment of #InstaKC Captures pays tribute to our city's signature cuisine.

The Legendary Sandwich

Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que is legendary for a number of different reasons. First is probably that its orignal location is inside an old gas station. Second is the long line that forms outside the restaurant before it even opens its doors. Third? The Z-Man.

Smoked brisket plus smoked, melted provolone plus two onion rings plus sauce, all on a kaiser bun. It's a can't-miss Kansas City food item that definitely deserves the reputation it's earned.

KCK Classic

Southwest of the Missouri border, you'll find a barbecue classic that dates back more than 50 years. Originally a lumber yard, Woodyard Bar-B-Que keeps its menu as simple as the smokers are hot.

Ribs, hot wings or the renowned burnt end chili, there's no going wrong at this establishment—just ask Chef Michael Corvino.

Dine 'n' Play

Award-winning barbecue, outdoor amusements and an extensive drink list make for a heady combo of Kansas City cuisine at Char Bar, a favorite found right in the heart of Westport

Head outside to the beer garden for a game of croquet or bocce ball in between bites of delicious barbecue, which features a hint of Southern influence. Not to worry, though: this 'cue is as KC as it gets.

Old School Favorite

The one that started it all. There's something special about dining in a world-renowned restaurant as unpretentious as Arthur Bryant's, once described as "the single best restaurant in the world."

There's a rhythm here unlike any else in KC. Step up to the window and place your order, but be warned: the crew behind the glass works fast, so know what you want in advance and make it simple. You won't be disappointed.
