Kansas City is famous for its BBQ and jazz, but after your stay with us, Hotel Phillips will be on that list too. This address has always held a special place in Kansas City’s heart. When it opened in 1931, the 20-story, 450-room hotel was the tallest in the city, costing an impressive $1.6 million. It was also the only commercial building with a radio receiver in every room. Before Hotel Phillips, the Glennon Hotel stood here, where Harry S. Truman, who later became the 33rd President of the United States, ran a haberdashery on the ground floor.
Many of the original Art Deco details from the 1930s are still present today, including the intricate bronze and nickel metalwork, rich walnut paneling, stylish light fixtures, and a brass mail chute that spans all 20 stories.
Overlooking the lobby is an 11-foot gilded statue of the goddess of Dawn, symbolizing hospitality and the mother of the stars. Over the years, many stars have passed through our marble halls, from John Barrymore to modern celebrities like LeBron James, Paul McCartney, and Gwen Stefani.
In 1979, Hotel Phillips was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2016, a $20 million renovation was completed, restoring the hotel’s 1930s elegance while enhancing the food and beverage offerings, comfort, amenities, and modern touches.
Today, we offer 216 spacious guest rooms, including a one-bedroom suite, all featuring high-tech amenities and modern finishes with a 1930s flair.
