In a mesmerizing display of science, 13 kinetic sculptures literally dance with the wind and water amid a scenic, nature-filled backdrop at “Whirlwind: Art in Motion,” a new exhibit at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.  

The motion—generated entirely by natural elements—prompts each sculpture to alter its form in real time to create the illusion of many different shapes in one. It is a relaxing fusion of nature, art and science, not to mention the perfect occasion to use the “boomerang” video function on your smartphone.

The exhibit, which opened in April and will run through mid-fall 2019, features the work of 10 different artists. All presenting artists are well-respected sculptors with numerous installations and public art pieces on display around the world.

Each work of kinetic art boasts its own unique rhythm and design. “Oval Ripples” by Jeffery Laudenslager could appear like a target with multiple repeating circles or like the planet Saturn with orbiting rings, depending on the wind. “Tangerine Glider” by Jeff King paints a bold orange whirl across the blue Kansas sky, mimicking the soaring wings of a giant dragonfly 10 feet above ground. And “Dance with the Wind” by Ralfonso (originally commissioned for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008) features a pyramid of ring and ball elements that sway and undulate in the center of a water garden.

“Whirlwind: Art in Motion” will impress photographers, art enthusiasts, nature lovers, and everyone in between who want to view extraordinary art while strolling through picturesque landscapes. The exhibit is free with admission to the Arboretum.
